Does anyone know someone local who can help obtain this document ?

U should ask to the Commune, or better to the Mayor who is in charge for keeping the birth registry.
Ive looked for the mayor's email adress but it seams there are no emails available...u could send a fax, instead.
the nr is 0039 0984 935270.
U could write your request this way:

"Spett.le Comune di San Benedetto Ullano,
sono un discendente ed avrei bisogno del certificato di Benedetto Milano, nato da Giovanni Milano
e Rosaria Capparelli nel 1894 nel Vs paese.
Potete cortesemente inviarmi il certificato al fax (your nr)

I am trying to get a birth certificate for my great-grandfather in San Sosti, but so far I have not had a reply to my fax.

Any other suggestions on how to obtain this document?

maybe the problem is that there is some cost for them to make a copy of the certificate? I would be happy to pay for it but I am not sure how to do this from here.

I live in northern Italy (after having spent 15 years in England) and realize how difficult it is for foreigners who have to face "italian" bureaucracy! My husband is from San Benedetto Ullano and so I was curious to read your announcement on this forum .... but he can't be of any help to you.
I very much doubt that you can get hold of the birth certificate easily without giving reasons and explanations as to why you need it.
I would suggest you contact one of your nearest Italian consulates or embassies and ask them first, if it's possible and then how you should go about asking for such information. At least you will be able to speak to them in English and explain what you need and why and they should be able to give you the right indications.
There may be a law that prevents "whoever" asking for information, so you may have to follow a certain procedure. We do have a law on the "treatment of private data" that prevents us from obtaining information on whoever (even though we may be related).
I realize you may need this info. in order to understand where your "roots" started.

Dubito che qualcuno abbia letto la sua mail, le anticipo che l unica difficoltà nel reperire il certificato, sta nel fatto che un incendio negli anni '50 ha distrutto l' archivio comunale....ma la mia ragazza forse può reperire una copia del documento parrocchiale...se crede che le possa essere ancora utile sono a sua disposizione.

ps. è inutile che tenta di contattare il nostro comune, visto che non ci riesco io che vi abito a 80 metri!!!!
