Charge of Carabinieri on horseback

Pastrengo April 30th, 1848

Historical contest

It was during the first War of Independence. Late in the morning, on April 30th, 1848.

The Piedmont troops were marshalled and ready to conquer thw position of Pastrengo, still solidly in the hands of Marshal Radestzky.

King Charles Albert patrolled the environs of the now imminent battle. For reasons of safety, he was preceded by a scouting party of a dozen Carabinieri.

From the bushes om the enemy front, a sudden fusillade of the musketry made the horses veer and exposed the isolated King to other, more dangerous attacks.

Major A. Negri of Sanfront recognised the dangerous situation and, at the head of three squadrons of Carabinieri of the Royal Escort, he prompty intervened with an overwhelming charge, which ensured the safety of King Charles Albert.
